The rough draft of the housing design for the sonic sensors and haptic motors |
S.A.V.E. Design Project
 |
This hat will be the "frame" for the final prototype |
We decided on having every sensor sewed in with cloth
made out of polyester and cotton for the comfort of the user. The cap
is divided into 3 parts: the visor, the panels, and the strap. With that
in mind we decided on having a cap with a relatively low visor so the
sensors could pick up foreign objects within a 2-3 m radius from the
user's feet. The first sensor will be directly in the middle of the
visor and the visor will be offset at a -15
° from
the horizontal axis. The horizontal axis we chose was the user's
forehead/peak point of the visor so the calculations and the
visualization would be easier. Usually a cap would be in the range of -5
to -10
° but that would be to far for the purposes of our design and might disturb the user with vibrations of objects more than 5m away.

This clip located on the front brim will house the front most sensor of our protoype |
The sensors will be placed at a sufficient distance
away from each other so that they don't interfere with one another. One
sensor will be placed in the middle of the visor as the diagram shows.
Two others will be placed at the end of the visors to ensure the user
can know what is front of him/her. The last two will be placed at the
ends of the strap for so the user can react to objects approaching
his/her rear.
